Five stages stand between a Zurich business and a place in our rankings. Here is how Zurich10 editors research, verify, select and review every list.
In a city with high standards, a recommendation has to be earned. Zurich10 rankings are not a register of everyone who offers a service; they are a short selection of the ones we would point a friend towards. Each list goes through the same five stages before it is published, and again every time it is reviewed.
Defining the field
We first establish which businesses offer the relevant service in each of the twelve districts, from Wollishofen to Schwamendingen. Our attention stays on Zurich and the places its residents actually use, so that a Zurich ranking stays useful to someone who lives or works here and nobody is sent on an unnecessary train journey.
Weighing track record
The decisive question is how a business has served its customers over a sustained period. Steady, consistent standing counts for more than a sudden wave of attention, and a practice, workshop or restaurant that has kept the same clientele for years usually has a very good reason for it.
Verifying the essentials
Address, phone number, opening hours and whether the business is still active: all of it is checked before a listing goes live. Closed businesses, ones that have left the area and duplicate entries are removed, because in Zurich a guide is only as useful as it is precise.
Making the cut
Businesses are compared only with others in the same trade, and only those that clearly stand out reach the final list. If a category has few strong candidates, the ranking stays short rather than being filled up with average entries. We would rather publish fewer names than weaker ones.
Scheduled review
Each ranking is revisited at regular intervals. New openings that have proved themselves can enter, places that have slipped or closed leave, and details are brought up to date. In the meantime, reliable corrections from readers and owners are applied as soon as they have been confirmed.
